Travertine began life as a limestone, which over time through geological shifting, has found its way deep within the earths crust. Formed by a combination of dissolved limestone and granules travertine is then created by this solution mixing with hot pressurised steam from aquifers underground. The resulting travertine is then, through further geological shifting is pushed to the surface where it is currently quarried.

Stonell has introduced a wide variety of travertine tiles that are sourced from both Turkey and Italy. We buy filled, unfilled and tumbled travertine all of which create a different feel with unfilled tiles and tumbled travertine creating an aged look soon after initial use, all of which are guaranteed to enhance your home.

Whilst at Stonell we only select from the dense lower travertine beds, due to the way travertine is formed, small holes that lie beneath the surface that may appear during the first few months of wear. These can be easily filled with grout, giving decades of hard wear.

Please note: Due to the nature of natural stone each tile will vary slightly in colour, shade and texture. This is part of its character and adds to its charm.

Limestone is the result of millions of years of sea shells and bones of sea creatures settling as sediment on the ocean floor. The calcium in the bones and shells combines with carbon dioxide in the water to form calcium carbonate, which is the basic mineral structure of the stone.

Limestone's wide array of shades, colours, textures and durability make it a very popular stone for both traditional and contemporary interiors. The sheer choice of honed, polished, aged, brushed and tumbled limestone tiles that can be used for both walls and floors has added ever expanding appeal to this delightful product.

When we at Stonell source our limestone tiles, we only consider limestones that are both hard and that have low porosity. There is plenty of cheap limestone on the market that is simply not suitable for high usage areas like kitchens and halls. Due to its porosity these tiles will stain very easily. You can guarantee that by visiting one of our showrooms you will get the very best advice and your product will both be suitable for the area in which you wish to use it and will give you decades of hard wear.

Please note: Due to the nature of natural stone each tile will vary slightly in colour, shade and texture. This is part of the character of stone and adds to its charm.

Both these stones are formed as a result of volcanic activity and are amongst some of the hardest natural stones known to man. Granite is formed from molton magma deep below the earths crust which has cooled over millions of years and solidified. Basalt is the result of molton magma erupting from volcannoes and cooling quickly forming a solid mass.

Slate is a metamorphic rock, like marble, however instead of forming from pre existing limestone it is formed with the low-grade metamorphism of the sedimentary rock shale.

Like shale, it is a very fine-grained rock comprised mostly of microscopic clay minerals, with traces of quartz and calcite. The alteration of shale by heat and pressure produces the pronounced partings (slate cleavage) which give slate its characteristics.

Slate is equally at home in both contemporary and traditional design schemes with Stonell's Mountain slate tile range giving a smooth modern feel. Other more rustic tiles are perfect for a traditional room both with the added bonus of being very hard-wearing.

Please note: Due to the nature of natural slate each tile will vary slightly in colour, shade and texture. This is part of its character and adds to its charm.

Given enough heat and pressure, limestone will crystallise, resulting in marble, which is technically termed "metamorphic limestone". Unlike limestone, the crystal structure of marble allows it to take a polish which accentuates the beautiful colours and veining for which it is famous.

Stonell offer several marble tiles in its polished stone range, from the famous white Thassos marble from Greece to the cream and brown marble of Spain and Turkey all of which will add style to your home.

Please note: Due to the nature of natural marble each tile will vary slightly in colour, shade and texture. These patterns are part of its character.

We are very excited to be able to offer this exclusive range of English Limestone sourced from quarrys throughout the Midlands and East Anglia. All of these traditional limestones come from the band of limestone deposits stretching from Norfolk and Lincolnshire through Northamptonshire and into the Cotswolds. Whilst these limestones were once commonly used in all the traditional buildings in these areas they haven't been widely available for some time, that is until now.
